R/V  Tangaroa (R/V = Research Vessel) built on 1991, is a research ship flagging New Zealand and of property of the NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research). It is employed in oceanographic Campaigns (biological and physical oceanography and marine geology). During last XIX Italian Antarctic Scientific Expedition in Antarctica, Italian researchers did  carry out activity within the international program called  Victoria Land Transect (VLT), just for example, Dr.Laura Ghigliotti, a young biologist, graduated at the University of Genova in the year 2000  and a deep expert of marine Antarctic biology was in Antarctica, on board of the R/V Tangaroa in the year 2004. The ship is equipped of an integrated system of navigation, gyrocompass, autopilot, Radar Furuno 2830 S and Furuno 1530 D, GPS Magnavox and Was, automatic meteorological station, and of course, a system for 10 cubic meter sweet water production in 24 hours time. A sea water pumping system has a capacity of approximately 30m3 per hour for scientific purpose is built in the vessel.nz_tangaroa.jpg Capable of working throughout New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in conditions ranging from subtropical to sub-antarctic, Research Vessel Tangaroa is well equipped for a wide range of stock assessment work. Powerful, low pressure hydraulic winches feature up-to-date auto-trawl technology. Electronic monitoring systems give full information on gear depth, door spread and net opening. Tangaroa is also fully equipped for fisheries acoustic work. Recent modifications for marine geological research include a deepwater coring system (to 5000 m) and air compressors for seismic surveys.

Now, according to Antarctic reflector (TNX F5NOD & F5PFP) it looks like Wilbert ZL2BSJ will take part to an oceanographic mission as technician near ZL7 and ZL9 on board of R/V Tangaroa next January 2008 and will though activate that wanted New Zealand research vessel.
Well, now we know the ship little better and we are ready for working ZL2BJS/MM on board of R/V Tangaroa.
