At the moment he has many duties to perform, but he should soon be  active as HFØPOL. This is his 4th time there, and he is going to be there the whole year during 2008. KC4AAA Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. WAP USA-21

KC4AAA r.jpgFollowing the interesting debate on the Antarctic Reflector, a group of American Antarctic veterans are working on a solution of the problem.

Now, Adam K2ARB, is pleased to report that Larry K1IED has a freshly printed stack of KC4AAA cards ready to fill out. Once he receives the logs from Helmut he will begin answering QSL cards from Helmut's operation (KC4AAA by W6KDX) immediately. It would be very helpful if those of you have unanswered QSLs for US Antarctic stations would send me an email giving any identifying information for the operators you worked, ie name of operator, his/her personal callsign, Antarctic station contacted, and the date of the QSO. Perhaps we can find out if any logs exist for that operator. All QSL requests in Larry's possession will be answered with QSLs in the near future, one way or another - either confirming the QSO, or thanking the unlogged station for its signal report.
We will also place a log search on the upcoming United States Antarctic Program Amateur Radio website that is in the early development stage. If one of you is handy with this application, please email me directly, Adam said.

Useful to know....
By the end of the 70es the ships of Naval Transports were almost at the end of their life. A government’s  decree of the 3/10/1975 did  authorized to build three new cargo ships for the service of the Southern Coast and Antarctica. They were  ordered to the Shipyard Principe, Menghi and Penco. Ther name of the ships build were: "Canal de Beagle", "Bahia San Blas" and "Cabo de Hornos" .
On 1978 these ships were assigned to the Naval Transport service of the Argentinean Navvy.

Last Dec.17th M/V Canal de Beagle weigh anchor, heading South. It is going to supply the Argentinean Antarctic bases with fuel and foods. M/V Canal de Beagle will be able to reach  all the bases with the exception of  Marambio and Belgrano 2 which can only be approached by icebreakers". The bases that will be supplied are: Esperanza, Jubany, San Martín, Primavera, Orcadas, Camara, Petrel, Brown, Melchior and Matienzo. During the summer, it is planned that  another ship will sail down to resupply the bases of Marambio and Belgrano 2. Source: inforegion.com.ar

As sailing the Antarctic waters, LU4ACB/MM will enter in the WAP Awards and also on French Antarctic Challenge.

Bouvet Island official press release by pilot station and media officer

18 December 2007

Posted to WAP by: ZS6DXB Rhynhardt Louw.

Newly licensed operator Petrus, ZS6GCM is currently on Bouvet Island, for the following estimated dates: 13 December 2007 until 14 February 2008.  He is part of a five man Norwegian led research team.  Petrus is the medical officer of the team and will also be involved with the research.

The Icom IC-735 and Hustler 4-BTV vertical antenna was made available by the NCDXF, OKDXA & Bernie, ZS4TX.

3Y-ZS6GCM r.jpgBeing newly licensed, Petrus ZS6GCM has limited HF experience.  A brief training session and operating procedures were giving to Petrus in Cape Town by Rhynhardt Louw “Rhy”, ZS6DXB, a couple of days prior to departure.  Video footage and audio recordings of past DXpeditions were used to ensure that Petrus had an understanding of what he was letting himself into.  Petrus displayed full understanding of the job at hand and I am more than certain the he will make a pretty good job from working pileups, Rhy said.

Rhynhardt Louw “Rhy” ZS6DXB has also been appointed as the station pilot and media officer should you require any information please feel free to contact Rhy ZS6DXB.

Application for a dedicated 3Y call is underway and will be made public as soon as the call has been approved.  Landing permission was granted months ago as it is a Norwegian research party that so happened to have a South African in their company.

Petrus will have limited time to operate as a result of the work load and availability of electrical power.

Future information to be made public:

2.      Website address

Having only recently arrived on Bouvet, he could just have quickly set up a radio equipment and worked already few stations to check conditions. Being newly licensed he has no experience of pile-ups. Activity will be during spare time only.

Just remind the WAP chasers that Bouvet is WAP referenced as WAP NOR-Ø2. On the Norwegian Sub Antarctic island of Bouvet, there is an automatic weather station established by the Norwegians sited on the Nyrøysa in 1977. A temporary five-man station was established the following year, superseded by another automatic weather station which continues to operate. Bouvetøya became a Nature Reserve in 1971.

AURORAS & PHILATELY
“Aurora”
is the Latin name of the ancient Roman goddess of the dawn. The Aurora borealis are the northern lights, and the Aurora australis are the southern lights.
The polar lights are a luminous glow seen in the night sky at high latitudes surrounding the north and south magnetic poles. Auroras.jpgThese auroras are the result of a magnetic storm — when Earth’ magnetic field is unusually active due to a dynamic interaction with the Sun. During magnetic storms, energetic electrons descend from space and collide with molecules in the upper atmosphere, leading to the emission of green and sometimes red light. Auroras come in different visual forms, including arcs, curtains and rays, and are a relatively common sight in Alaska, Canada and northern Europe. Today, the aurora is the subject of scientific investigation, with researchers from many countries collaborating during International Polar Year 2007–2008.
