Posted by Alberto Mattei IT9MRM @ Italian Navvy
Under the command of Commander Álvaro Armaño, last 18th February the ship "Oyarvide" of the Uruguayan Army did sail towards Antarctica, taking on board Venezuelan scientists and military people for a joint Antarctic campaign. The Venezuelan mission is composed from five military officials and eleven researchers who will carry out oceanic studies and will participate among Uruguayan specialists to plans of study on the various ichthyic sorts in icy waters of Antarctica. The Venezuelan Antarctic campaign will finish at the end of March. The mission will be carried out in the Uruguayan scientific base of ARTIGAS (WAP URY-Ø1). The Uruguayan scientists will teach and prepare the Venezuelans in studies and navigation to be able to operate in the icy Antarctic seas. M/V Oyarvide, (Optical Symbol: R22, International callsign: CWBH) is approximately 70 mts long, 12,7mts wide and can reach 16 knots of maximum speed.
The way from Venezuela to Antarctica will last 12-13 days, and it will stop for a while the port of Ushuaia WAP ARG-23 (Argentina), and Punta Arenas WAP CHL-13 (Chile). No reports of Hams operator on board, nor at ARTIGAS BASE …. Sry!

Good DX last night, there were plenty of stations on. Managed to work LU4DXU @ 22.00 Z on 14315 along with GM3ITN and 3 other stations in Argentina. The weather was very rough and had to wedge myself into a corner. A friend from New Foundland came up as well.... VO1HE, Paul.... great copy that one and Easter Island was on air.I have a vertical for 40 metres that I could try, my tuner will be able to match that easily for 20 I hope. I am keen to get some more in my log sheet for this week, we are at Jougla point until 17.00z then heading towards Argentina. TNX G7MAR/MM
M/V Saga Ruby will count for WAP-WACA until it sail on Antarctic & Sub Antarctic waters, therefore it is OK until it reachs Ushuaia.

IN THE WAKE of the BELGICA 1987-2007
Inspired by the Belgica Expedition led by the late Baron Adrien de Gerlache, in the 110th anniversary of its trip, an Antarctica Sail Expedition has been set up by the Sailing Yacht Euronav Belgica. Dixie Dansercoer and the crew of The Euronav Belgica, did repeat this expedition in the South Pole in the winter of 2007-2008. Whilst in the South Pole, Dixie and his team did not only follow step by step the route taken by Adrien de Gerlache, but also did climb previously unexplored and unnamed mountains trying to gather ecological and meteorological data. The S/Y Euronav Belgica and her sailors are now safely back in the harbour of Ushuaia... Almost 110 years ago, on the 16th August 1897, Adrien Victor Joseph de Gerlache (lieutenant in the Royal Belgian Navy) and his multinational crew (Belgian, Romanian, Polish, Norwegian, Russian and American) set sail from Antwerp to Antarctica. This expedition was the most cosmopolitan of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. Two of its members became world famous: second officer Roald Amundsen the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and Doctor Frederick Cook who claimed to have discovered the North Pole in 1908. Argentinean Ship M-V ARA BAHIA SAN BLAS
Posted by Alberto Mattei IT9MRM
Argentine Navy has currently several Ships operating in Antarctic waters: ARA " Bahía San Blas", ARA "Canal de Beagle", ARA "Suboficial Castillo" , "Gurruchaga" and the Corvette ARA "Rosales". The tasks assigned within the mission are of environmental protection, support to possible cases of research and recovery to shipwrecked (SAR) and support to the Antarctic Campaign. Currently the ship ARA " Bahia San Blas" (picture above), is the last one arrived to the port of Ushuaia; its mission will last 40 days and will transport two nozzles from disembarkation to the "Destacamento Naval de Playa". This transport ship in service from 1978, has technical specifications that allow it to enter in all the ports of the Antarctic zone, as an example, the unevenness in the keel which permits it to strand in the sand in order to carry out disembarkation operations. M/V " Baia San Blas" is 119,20 meters in length and is equipped by two engines with two propellers that allow it to be easily manoeuvred and be independent from the aid of a tug. It possesses four holds for cargo and containers, while the covered crane grants it autonomy in moving the loaded material. Unfortunately there is no Ham operators on board.

Amanda-IceCube at South Pole
Alfio Rizzo an Italian researcher have been selected for the 2005 CERN (Geneva) School of Computing and started his PhD in December of 2004 within the Ice Cube neutrino telescope at the South Pole.
At present, experimental work is carried out at the accelerator complexes of CERN (Geneva) and DESY (Hamburg) as well as in a cosmic ray laboratory installed at the South-Pole (AMANDA-ICE3 experiment) for Cosmic Particle Search.
The AMANDA neutrino detector is located at the South-Pole, frozen deep into the ice. It consists of a three-dimensional lattice of 677 optical modules distributed on 19 "strings". ICECUBE is the extension of the AMANDA detector to a 1 km3 dimension. The work consists in the analysis of the AMANDA/ICECUBE data with the aim of searching for neutralino Dark Matter accumulated in the center of the Sun. On Jan 28th they finished commissioning the group of four strings, which would represent IC34. The commissioning of the new IceTop stations is also finished on Feb 03. I have just received (Thanks to Belgian BPES) a nice envelope, posted from South Pole and signed on top by Alfio Rizzo! Thanks though for such a nice present!
