VP8 Callsigns for BAT (British Antarctic Territory)
Posted by ON3AX & ON5AX on F5NOD Antarctica Reflector (Abstract)
Two years ago we were on a trip to the Falklands , and "to be sure to do nothing illegal in the future" we decided there to buy a license at the post office that we could use on our future trips in the BAT region. We got the callsign VP8DII. The female employee at the Post office confirmed us that this is was "lifetime license". Since then We are proud owners of a VP8DII callsign. The same year, we made the trip to the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula on board of the Dutch sail ship Bark Europa and got permission from the captain to use our Ham radio from aboard. During this trip through claimed British Antarctic Territory we have used the callsign VP8DII/MM instead of ON5AX/MM or ON3AX/MM and made a lot of radio contacts.
Best 73 Willy ON5AX & XYL Magda ON3AX
QSL of VP8DII is loaded on the WAP Antarctic QSL Gallery.

A common QSL card of LU4DXU/MM "Corbeta Uruguay" and LU4ACB/MM "Canal de Beagle" will be printed in a few months as the French Polar Team did in the past for LU8DSC/mm "Suboficial Castillo" and LU4ARA/mm "Puerto Deseado". Just be little patient. TNX F5PFP.

IPY-International Polar Year
Posted by: Karen Edwards
Karen is the coordinator for the Canadian IPY Secretariat and the Canadian IPY Network will be developing and organizing the upcoming "People at the Poles" International Polar Day on September 24, 2008.
http://www.ipy.org/index.php?/ipy/detail/international_polar_days/
Karen wrote: One unique aspect of Polar Days to date is the inclusion of live events that connect classrooms, scientists and communities. In past Polar Days the medium used for the live events has been webinars and/or video/tele-conferencing. With the September Polar Day being focused on the human dimension of the polar regions we wanted to incorporate the use of radio in the hosting of a series of live events across the globe to highlight one of the oldest and most consistent forms of communication in the polar regions. We also want to ensure that polar communities have access to participate and engage in the live events for People Polar Day. Beyond the use of radio stations we would like to engage the Ham radio community but I am unsure of exactly how (mostly because I am not aware of the technology that connects or does not connect those two mediums of radio). All the best, Karen Edwards

Check the above web sites, or write to Karen. She will provide one page summary with a draft plan for the radio station contribution to the live event. Perhaps you can look at it and let her know if you see any avenues where ham radio operators could get involved.
I thank you very much for considering this opportunity and I welcome any suggestions you may have.
