From Mc Murdo - Antarctica by: Peter Rejcek
Hello, Sun readers, November was a busy month on the Ice, with the austral summer season in full swing despite some patches of rough weather. A visit by The Today Show's Ann Curry lent an air of additional excitement to operations and provided a national spotlight on Antarctic science.New feature stories are available in this issue. Remember, all content is now in html format. We are no longer doing PDF issues, though you can find all the issues from previous years by clicking on the Past Issues link at left. You can still print out new, individual articles if that's your preferred method. Just click on the printer icon just above the right corner of the article. Currently, for multi-page articles you have to print each individual page. However, we'll soon fix that with a link inside the articles that will pop up a new window that will allow you to print the story in its entirety.
Finally, don't forget you can keep up with the weekly postings at the new Sun Web site by hitting the "Subscriptions" link on the left side of the homepage. That will take you to a page where you can subscribe to the latest gee-whiz Internet technology — RSS feeds. RSS makes it possible for subscribers to get Antarctic Sun updates delivered directly to their desktops whenever we post new content.

Church in Antarctica
Our project for a Church in Antarctica is shown at the famous “Restructura” Exhibition, held till Dec. 2nd -2007 at the large “Lingotto Fiere Hall” in the city of Turin, Italy.
Biotechnology and Bio-building materials are the features for this revolutionary method of buildings, which meets the specifications for new Antarctic buildings requiremets. Saint Gobain & Bertero Technology, represented by Tosimpresa an important Company here in North Italy, did carry on the challenge. Lets not forget that these Companies have decided to build and donate a Church in Antarctica to be assembled at the Italian base Mario Zucchelli Station.
Picture here on the right show Sebastiano Bertero (Left) and Aldo Testa (Right) at the Show room with the poster of the church, first one which will be ever built in Antarctica made by bio-building materials. (More details at "Church in Antarctica" section at your left)

VP8APK a nice QSL story.
Please to QSL after 24 years! That is what David Young G4RDU, ex VP8APK (g4rqu@hotmail.com) did write on the back side of VP8APK QSL. The story begun when I was trying to recover some old Antarctic cards. I have been recently lucky with VP8CMR, VP8AOD, with FB8ZP, D88S and few others but even though there are some still unanswered I’m optimistic. David wrote:
Your e-mail was a complete surprise. I was indeed operating in the Falkland Is, as I worked for the British Forces Broadcasting Service and my call-sign was VP8APK. I am now a musician on a cruise ship in the Caribbean and do not have QSL cards. However, if you send me your postal address, I can confirm the contact on a postcard and post the card to you. Regards, David Young (G4RQU)
and again: G4RQU here, ex VP8APK. Just to tell you that I have completed your QSL card and my wife will post it to you, in an envelope, from England within the next few days. She has been with me for the past two weeks. Thanks for designing the card. It was printed on the ship with standard paper so you may want to laminate it. Let me know when you receive it. Best wishes, David Young from the Carnival Legend Today I've got the envelope and the card and YES ..it's a great story having got VP8APK after 24 Years!
Through the WAP page I would like to express my sympathy and thanks to David G4RQU whishing him well now on board of the Ship “Carnival Legend” sailing across the Caribbean !

XXIII Italian Antarctic Expedition
The XXIII Italian scientific mission in Antarctica (2007-2008) has taken to the way at beginning of November . It foresee 2 periods of activity:
First one called summery, from October 30th 2007 to February 4th 2008, and a winter one from January to November 2008. Scientific activities within the XXIII Italian Scientific Expedition will be carried out in Antarctica, with several restraint due to the cuts to the financings which will cause particular suffering and limiting. The participants between technicians, logistic and researchers are approximately 122 and will perform their activities at Mario Zucchelli Station, Terra Nova Bay northern Victoria Land (Ross Sea), than at the Italian-French Station Concordia “Dome C” on the Antarctic plateau.
Among the activities going on, in the light of the international agreements, an important one is TALDICE carried out at Talos Dome (72° 49' South -159° 11' West), about 200 km from Mario Zucchelli Station, where it is previewed the furtherance of perforation activity of continental ice.
Another project is ANDRILL/MIS (McMurdo Ice Shelf) that previews perforation the glacial platform of Ross’s sediment from onboard of special dedicated ship. To follow this program, some italian researchers then, are hosts at the American McMurdo Station, in order to carry out activity within of scientific International agreement. The long terms interaction between researchers of various countries has allowed, in the past years, continuous development and important goals which experiences shared are the final and common objective to all the country signers. Moreover research activities from onboard of the Italica Ship are also planned in the Ross Sea.

Discovering Polar Ships US ICEBREAKER NATHANIEL B. PALMER
Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO), is the most technologically advanced and fastest-growing offshore vessel service company in the world. In 1992, ECO, Galliano, Louisiana, built and delivered a 94-meter research ship with icebreaking capability for use by the U.S. Antarctic Program for 10 years or more. The ship, Nathaniel B. Palmer, is a first-rate platform for global change studies, including biological, oceanographic, geological, and geophysical components. It can operate safely year-round in Antarctic waters that often are stormy or covered with sea ice. It accommodates 37 scientists, has a crew of 22, and is capable of 75-day missions. The ship is named the Nathaniel B. Palmer to commemorate the American credited with first seeing Antarctica. Nathaniel Brown Palmer, then 21 years old, commanded the 14-meter sloop Hero, which on 16 and 17 November 1820 entered Orleans Strait and came very close to the Antarctic Peninsula at about 63° 45' South. Later in his life, Palmer also won wealth and fame as a pioneer clipper ship master and designer. Thanks and credit to: http://www.nsf.gov/od/opp/support/nathpalm.jsp
WAP is happy to show a recent (Nov.2007) envelope posted from Chile with covers from "Winter Cruise Bellinghause-Amundsen Sea" with signatures of the RIV Nathaniel B. Palmer participating the IPY 2007. We are grateful to Dr. Eddy de Busschere from Belgian Polar Expedition Society for sending such a great item.

Blue One Runway, Antarctica . 71° 32’ South - Ø8° 48’ East.
A land based tourism has been set up few years ago at Queen Maud Land in Antarctica, on an area relatively close to some Antarctic Bases, such as Maitri Station WAP IND-Ø3 (70° 45’57” South, 11° 44’ 09” East) and Novolazarevskaya Station, WAP RUS-Ø9 (70° 46’ 26”South , 11° 51’54”East).
Tent-based camps have been established around 2001 at 71° 32’ South, 08° 48’ East, about 15 kilometres from the Novolazarevskaya Station and now improperly called Novo Runway. Right name should be “Blue 1 Runway” .
RZ3BJ has got a call R1ANR to be used as Club Callsign from this location, and did show up on 14.170 from 17:00Z. “Blue One” or “Novo Runway” could became a WAP RUS-NEW. Another alternative could be to considered this location as WAP MNB-NEW, new Multinational Base such as Patriot Hills; let's see.
The old "Blue-1" ice runway, was a large project of the late 1980. One of the goals of this project was to locate runway sites close to Pole, which could have simplified the movement of construction materials for the new station, since wheeled aircraft can carry much heavier loads than the ski-equipped LC-130's.
Practically now, with this new facility, people can fly to Antarctica in 6 hours, taking off from Cape Town South Africa.
(ALCI) Antarctic Logistic Centre International.
ALCI, is South African company located in Cape Town, which is using the runway not far from the Russian Base Novolazarevskaya in Queen Maud Land (northern Antarctica) as the entry point for Antarctic flights and tourist proposals.
It is like a multinational facility which works with Governmental organizations as well, run by Russian technicians and Russian aircrafts.
ALCI's tourist proposal, involved the provision of seats on national program support flights by Ilyushin-76 heavy-lift jet aircraft from Cape Town to Blue-Ice (or Blue -1) Runway, near Russia's Novolazarevskaya Station. TNX DL5EBE, UA1PBA, K2ARB, F5PFP.
