Polar Philately is the specialized collecting and study of postage stamps, postmarks, covers, and mail tied to the Arctic and Antarctic. More than a hobby, it’s a postal archive of human activity at the poles, documenting exploration, scientific research, bases, ships, dog sled routes, and treaty events; Polar Philately is collecting mail from the Ends of the Earth.
For us, Antarctic (and Arctic) enthusiasts, Polar Philately is part of our passion! Here below, are a few examples of these recently received rarities
Letters carried on historic polar voyages, often bearing unique cachets and signatures from explorers. Cancels from active Antarctic stations marking daily life on the ice. Stamps issued by nations celebrating polar wildlife, research, or pioneers like Amundsen and Byrd. Paquebot marks from Iebreakers and Supply vessels that link the poles to the world.

Many Countries tell their polar story through philately. Norway honored Roald Amundsen’s 1911 South Pole feat in 2011. The British Antarctic Territory issues wildlife definitives, including the 2023 £2 Penguin. Australia’s AAT series features the icebreaker “Aurora Australis”. The USA commemorated Byrd’s 1933 Antarctic Expedition II flights with a 3¢ stamp. Russia marked Mirny Station’s 50th anniversary in 2006. Argentina issues “Día de la Antártida Argentina” stamps annually, while New Zealand’s Ross Dependency celebrated Scott Base’s 60 years in 2017. France’s TAAF continues its long-running Emperor Penguins and Kerguelen issues.

On May 23-30, 2026, Boston World Expo, did host a dedicated Polar Philately section. As a FIP-recognized “Specialized World Exhibition” class, it will showcase key themes: Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration mail, IGY 1957-58 research covers, modern base postmarks from McMurdo, Halley, and Zhongshan, plus polar aviation and ship mail routes. Major groups like the American Society of Polar Philatelists have been expected to hold meetings there.

It is a fact that Radio Amateurs, especially those with a passion for Antarctica, often have special envelopes in their albums alongside their various rare QSL cards, perhaps even some that arrived directly from Antarctica… It is not just a passion; it is a culture!
